If you are a woman over forty who is growing tired of feeling like you need to apply makeup every day, you’re not alone. Many women start to put more focus more on the health of their skin rather than hiding behind layers of makeup as they get older.

Radiant, smooth, youthful skin is what many women forty and beyond aspire to have. Some women are blessed with naturally beautiful skin, and others have to work for it. Regardless of what category you fall into, one thing for sure is, if you neglect your skin, it will show. On the other hand, when you treat your skin right, it’s the best thing ever.
I sell makeup, so by default, I have lots of it laying around. But that doesn’t mean I want to apply it every day. In fact, the older I get, the less I want to wear it. Instead, I’d rather have skin that doesn’t require much help from foundation and concealers.
Minimal makeup is becoming a thing for many women these days. This is especially true for women who’ve hit that forty-year-old mark. I’m not saying we don’t like it; we just don’t want to be a slave to it. And as we all know, no amount of makeup will ever be a substitute for a proper skincare routine.
I’m a big believer that if you focus on good skincare, you really won’t need a lot of makeup.
Did you know there are benefits associated with taking good care of your skin? Here are three of them:
Boosts confidence—it’s incredibly freeing to feel as though you can walk out of your house bare-faced. If you don’t feel you can do this, it’s probably time to take a closer look at how you care for your skin.
Summers and vacations are better—To each her own, but till this very day, I don’t know how women walk around in 90+ degree weather with a full face of makeup. If it’s by choice, fine, however, it should be just that, a choice. In my case, I choose to wear less product. It’s just too hot, and I can’t do it. Also, for some reason, I find that applying makeup while on vacation bothersome. I just want to enjoy my time away.
You spend less time applying makeup—You spend less time applying makeup—because I nurture my skin, it only takes me a few minutes to apply my makeup unless I’m trying to be extra for the day. Five minutes or less is all you need to create a flawless look when you lay the foundation by sticking with good skin-care habits.
Over the years, I’ve picked up useful tips and pointers from skincare professionals and beauty gurus on how to care for my skin. I’ve also taken a few classes and referenced a lot of beauty books. It’s the one thing I find extremely interesting and could talk about it for hours. My socks may not match every day, but my skincare is always on point. Click To Tweet
I have also learned that effective skincare doesn’t have to be expensive, which I find is a popular misconception. I’ve spent between a few dollars to a few hundred dollars on skincare products, as well as mixed up my own concoctions from ingredients lying around my kitchen. From my personal experience, sometimes the homemade mixtures work just as well as the costly ones if not better.
Now, you may be thinking; no one should be out here judging anyone on the condition of their skin. Well, this is absolutely true. What we’re talking about here is how you feel about the state of your skin.
A lot of times, though, we are far too hard on ourselves when it comes to appearance. We tend to overanalyze every wrinkle, blemish, and lack of firmness.
I believe that as women age, real beauty starts show. However, no one knows your skin better than you, so if you think your skin could use some help from a personal standpoint, here are some habits you might want to adapt.
18 Essential Habits of Older Women Who Don’t Wear Much Makeup
1. They remove their makeup every night.
Removing makeup before going to bed is not negotiable. No matter how tired you are, this is something that must be done if you want to prevent congested and enlarged pores.
2. They don’t leave home without sunscreen.
Wearing sunscreen every day is a crucial component of skin health. Adequate sun protection prevents premature wrinkles, leather-like skin, and cancer. Some sun damage cannot be reversed, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.
3. They stick to a skincare routine.
If you want to have skin that you can be proud of, you need a regimen, and you need to be consistent with it. Some women think they don’t have time for a beauty regimen, but it doesn’ t have to be complicated at all. Find an effective routine that you can commit to and reap the benefits of taking a few minutes for yourself every day.
4. They spend more money on skincare than makeup.
Makeup is fun. It can enhance and totally transform your look, but at the end of the day, it all comes off. Invest in your skin. After all, makeup is temporary, but your skin is forever.
5. They don’t fall for the hype.
Everywhere you look, there’s a new beauty product hitting the market, and since we all experience FOMO (fear of missing out) every once in a while, we fall for it. The next thing you know, you’re beauty products are occupying every bathroom in the house. If there’s a face cream or serum you think could be the one you’ve been looking for all your life, first research the product through reliable reviews to determine if this is a purchase you should make. Everything that appears to be gold isn’t always the best thing for you.
6. They know about ingredients.
Pretty women don’t just put anything on their face; they read labels to be sure that products don’t contain toxins and unnecessary fillers. Learn about how certain ingredients work and how they can benefit you and your needs.
7. They embrace aging.
Women who are confident and happy with growing older are beautiful on the inside, and it shows outwardly. Don’t try to look like you did when you were 20; instead, strive to look good for the age you are at this moment.
8. They make sure everything that touched their face is clean.
I’m sure you’ve heard that touching your face with your hands is a no-no because all the germs and bacteria that you’d be transferring are sure to cause breakouts. Well, this also goes for pillowcases, makeup brushes, and cell phones. Make sure anything that comes in contact with your face is not dirty.
9. They recognize when it’s time to switch things up.
A product could have been your saving grace for the last three years and then all of a sudden, it could stop working. Most of the time, it’s because your skin has changed and it’s time to try something else. Don’t be afraid to change up your routine or products to address the current issues you have going on with your skin. Learn to determine when it’s time to let go and move on.
10. They smile.
A smile is a mood booster and beauty all by itself because it lights your whole face up. When you make smiling a habit, it does more than any shade of lipstick can ever do.
11. They have effective ways of dealing with stress.
Stress is inevitable. We all experience it, but what matters most is how we deal with it. And I can tell you; smoking will most definitely work against your quest for gorgeous skin. The next time you feel stressed, go for a long walk or listen to some music. Do whatever you need to calm anxiety down, but make sure it’s something that’s not going to hurt you in the long run.
12. They have a skincare team.
Dermatologists and estheticians are essential for anyone who desires to keep their skin in tip-top shape. If you can, try to see a skin professional when skin issues arise that you need help with.
13. They get enough sleep.
Many of us simply don’t get enough sleep. And what we end up with is tired, dull-looking skin. Everyone is different, but typically, adults need at least 7 hours of sleep every night to look and feel their best. If you are having trouble sleeping, try coming up with a nighttime ritual that will ensure you get the rest you need.
14. They drink the good stuff.
I believe in putting good things inside your body because it does make a difference in what you see in the mirror. Drinking herbal teas, water, and smoothies that contain certain ingredients such as collagen powder can help with your overall appearance.
15. They eat lots of blueberries.
Blueberries are delicious and are packed with antioxidants and vitamins A, C and E. All of which are beneficial to skin health. Certain studies suggest that regularly consuming these little gems can provide you with more youthful, glowing skin. Incorporate them into your morning smoothies, oatmeal, or yogurt for a delicious, skin-beneficial treat.
16. They use beauty boosters.
Adding special at-home skin treatments or “boosters” such as serums and boosters to your skin regimen can make a significant impact on how your skin looks and behaves. As we get older, our skin changes drastically, especially once we cross into our forties. For one, fibers in our skin begin to break down, causing the need for products that help plump and tighten and sometimes traditional moisturizers won’t do the job.
Serums are lightweight and formulated to penetrate the skin deeper to deliver active ingredients into the skin. You don’t have to add serums to your skincare cocktail, but it won’t hurt, and it definitely helps. The key to finding a good serum is to research the ingredients and choose one that addresses your skin concerns. Most expensive doesn’t equate to best performing.
17. They are proactive.
Many skin care experts recommend using serums in your younger years to prevent damage from happening later in life. Some women in their forties don’t have a single skin issue because they started pampering their skin early on. The best treatment is prevention.
18. They choose products with intention.
Some skincare products are formulated to target specific areas. For instance, eye serums have been formulated to correct issues such as under-eye circles and puffiness. This is where knowing your skin and ingredients come into play. When selecting products for your arsenal, be sure to choose items that will work in the way you desire them to.
